Principal Scientist of Yahoo! Laboratory, Dr. Malcom Slaney was invited to visit MJRC. His visit was accompanied by Prof. Helen Meng, Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering (Research), CUHK and "Peng Cheng Professor" of THSZ.
Dr. Malcolm Slaney's research interests focus on processing multimedia data. Before Yahoo!, Dr. Slaney has worked at Bell Laboratory, Schlumberger Palo Alto Research, Apple Computer, Interval Research and IBM's Almaden Research Center. His research interests include auditory modeling and perception, multimedia analysis and synthesis, compressed-domain processing, music similarity and audio search, and machine learning.
During the visit, Dr. Slaney presented a talk on "Multimedia at the size of the Internet", and shared with the students about Yahoo's experiences in this brave new world of multimedia everywhere, described promising new technologies, and discussed open research directions.
This seminar is the kickoff of the "Peng Cheng Professorship Seminars" series. As a contribution from "Peng Cheng Professorship", Prof. Helen Meng will invite outstanding scholars and academics from both China and overseas to THSZ and MJRC. A series of seminars or talks will also be delivered by these scholars during their visits. This effort from Prof. Helen Meng will boost the national and international interactions and cooperation for MJRC and THSZ.
