WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO

“Tsinghua-CUHK Joint Research Center for Media Sciences, Technologies and Systems” brings the experts and researchers on multimedia from the Faculty of Engineering, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Tsinghua Graduate School at Shenzhen together. The center devotes on the research and development of multimedia processing, creates innovative systems and research platforms and provides high-level training opportunities for students and talents.

Principal Scientist of Yahoo! Laboratory, Dr. Malcom Slaney was invited to visit MJRC.  His visit was accompanied by Prof. Helen Meng, Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering (Research), CUHK and "Peng Cheng Professor" of THSZ.

Dr. Malcolm Slaney's research interests focus on processing multimedia data.  Before Yahoo!, Dr. Slaney has worked at Bell Laboratory, Schlumberger Palo Alto Research, Apple Computer, Interval Research and IBM's Almaden Research Center.  His research interests include auditory modeling and perception, multimedia analysis and synthesis, compressed-domain processing, music similarity and audio search, and machine learning.

During the visit, Dr. Slaney presented a talk on "Multimedia at the size of the Internet", and shared with the students about Yahoo's experiences in this brave new world of multimedia everywhere, described promising new technologies, and discussed open research directions.

This seminar is the kickoff of the "Peng Cheng Professorship Seminars" series.  As a contribution from "Peng Cheng Professorship", Prof. Helen Meng will invite outstanding scholars and academics from both China and overseas to THSZ and MJRC.  A series of seminars or talks will also be delivered by these scholars during their visits.  This effort from Prof. Helen Meng will boost the national and international interactions and cooperation for MJRC and THSZ.

Delegation from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) visited Division of Information Science and Technology, THSZ and MJRC as well on September 18th, 2009.  The delegation was led by Prof. David, Dapeng Zhang, Chair of Department of Electronic Computing, HKPU.  Prof. Zhang is also an honorary Professor of THSZ.  Delegation members expressed their interests in future cooperation with MJRC.
